Q1. While lifting a load using a manual winch, what happens if I let go of my hands on the handle?

A1 Our manual winch is equipped with the automatic brake that works by load. So if you release your hands, the brake is applied to stop the winch operation. For the shape of the automatic brake, see the illustration diagram of the automatic brake mechanism.

Description of automatic brake mechanism

Q2. The brake of my manual winch does not work.

A2. The manual winch lifts the load when the handle is rotated clockwise. It lowers the load when the handle is rotated counterclockwise. If the wire rope is wound counterclockwise, the automatic brake does not work and it may cause to fall a load when the wire rope that is wound on the drum is loose and it wound again. Be sure to start winding the wire rope in the direction indicated by the winding direction of wire rope label on the winch body.

The brake lining is a consumable item. If the brake is not effective in the long term use, replace the brake lining.

Q3. The brake of the manual winch has been biting, does not work, and the handle is not rotated.

A3. Sometimes the brake is bitten and the handle is not rotated due to overload for some reason while the manual winch is operating. In such a case, attach the handle in the nine o'clock direction and strike it by using the wooden hammer in downward direction. The biting will be released, and the handle can be rotated.

Q4. How can I use the manual capstan winch?

A4. The capstan winch pulls a load by using the friction of a wire rope that is wound five or so times on the drum. Therefore, the length of the wire rope used is unlimited.

However, in order to cause this frictional force, tension must be applied to the wire rope on the opposite side of the load. Please note this when purchasing this model.

Example of use

  • Movement of the truck
  • Opening and closing of the stage settings
  • Opening and closing of the arcade
  • Putting up the safety nets for Fire Department Training

Q5. I want to use Mini Maxpull Winch PM-100 to lift a load.

A5. The brake on Mini Maxpull Winch Model PM-100 is manually operated. The stopper can leave it set when lifting, but it must be released when lowering. This may cause fall the load and it is dangerous. When releasing the stopper, hold the handle by your hand, or do so with no load.

Please use this Mini Maxpull (Model PM-100) only for pulling horizontally. When lifting a load vertically, please use Mini Maxpull Winch PM-200 equipped with the automatic brake.

Q6. What kind of situation by using manual ratchet winch?

A6. The ratchet winch is used in a restricted spaces where the handle can not be rotated a full 360 degrees. Move the switch lever (red ball) attached to the ratchet handle to the right, and reciprocate the handle when lifting a load. Move the switch lever (red ball) attached to the ratchet handle to the left, and reciprocate the handle when lowering a load.

Q7. How can I purchase the proper part of the manual winch?

Exploded views of manual winches GM-1, GM-3, GM-5, GM-10, GM-20 and GM-30 are shown in the PDF file. See the exploded view of your model and indicate the part number you need.

When ordering parts, be sure to indicate the serial number of your model (a six-digit integer).

Q8. What is the difference of the surface treatment of the manual stainless steel winch?

A8. Although all exterior materials of manual stainless winches are made from stainless steel, they are classified into the following three types according to the difference in the surface treatment.

Metallic silver baking finish (Model ST) : ST-1, ST-3, ST-5, ST-10

Electropolishing (Model ESB) : ESB-1, ESB-3, ESB-5, ESB-10

Buffing (Model SB) : SB-1, SB-3, SB-5 ,SB-10

For Model ST, the baking finish is applied with metallic silver paint onto the stainless steel. Model ESB has excellent weather resistance by electropolishing of the stainless steel. Buffing is a mirror finish that is manually performed by the rotating buff with a buffing compound.

Q9. Can I operate the electric winches BMW-105, BMW-106 or BMW-107 with single-phase 100V?

A9. Because BMW-105, BMW-106 and BMW-107 are equipped with single-phase 100 V and 750 W motors and an electromagnetic brake, special wiring is required. In addition, you must select the diameter of the electrical wire so that the voltage drop maintain within 2%. Otherwise, the electromagnetic brake will not be released and it may cause a motor burn out. Please contact us before installing the electric winches.

Q10. What kind of situation by using BMW dog clutch series of electric winch?

A10. Once the wire rope is wound on the drum of the electric winch, users cannot unwind it by pulling by hand because of the motor with the electromagnetic brake. Therefore we have attached a dog clutch on the drum, so users can easily unwind the wire rope after the drum is set to the neutral position by operating of the lever.

Q11. What kind of situation by using BMW capstan series of electric winch?

A11. The electric winch pulls a load by using the friction of a wire rope that is wound five or so times on the drum. The tension must be applied to the hauling side in order to cause the frictional force.

Q12. What is the dual direction pulling endless winch?

A12. A capstan winch that can pull a truck and other objects in one direction only. Our EME series provide dual direction pulling by rotating two drums with several grooves.

For an example of actual use, see the attached PDF file.
